Second Phone Call

Matthew's second phone call (finally) came today. It has been highly anticipated and came at a great time. I had just completed my Early Childhood Special Education PLACE exam (Colorado's licensing exam), and he called about 20 minutes later. I was to the moon. I am happy to report that Matthew sounds GREAT! He said he is eating well and the food is good, and not just good in the way that he's starving and anything would be good, but good in the way that he said I would like it too (which apparently means it's decent food). He is even eating some things that he never really ate before, such as apples, oranges, spinach, yogurt, and to my dismay, bananas (eww).

His physical training (PT) is going really well and his last 1 1/2 mile run he clocked at 11:47, which he seemed very pleased with himself about. He has lost quite a bit of weight and almost lost his wedding band while running this morning. I think it's time for the ring to go on the dog tag chain around his neck. His flight has been assigned a new military training instructor (MTI), because there was question of whether or not the last one was respected enough by the guys. The new MTI gave them quite a bit of extra PT time yesterday-push-ups, sit-ups, flutter kicks, repeat.

He passed his first inspection. Out of 52 guys in the flight, only 21 of them passed. I know he was proud of himself for passing. He has been working really hard on getting everything perfect to make sure everything was right. He says now that he is comfortable with everything he knows he has to do, he will start writing letters, which will be greatly anticipated.

Since the Alamo Bowl is taking place in San Antonio during Matthew's graduation weekend, the graduating Airmen and their families have been invited to attend the game on Thursday evening, December 29. We are super excited for this news, as this gives us an extra evening with Matthew (the guys typically have to report back to their dorms at 8:00pm, but since it is a night game, they have been awarded an extra Town Pass and do not have to report back until after the game).

He is making some good friends and said this is the best thing he has done. He is keeping his positive attitude and doing an amazing job. I am so incredibly proud of him! Looking forward to his next call, which should come Thanksgiving Day. Operation Home Cooking allows families from around San Antonio to "adopt" trainees for the day into their homes. All of the AB's in WOT 2-7 qualify for this and are being adopted out, so Matthew will get to spend Thanksgiving Day off base and enjoy a nice, home cooked meal. And of course, make phone calls home without a MTI over his shoulder counting down his minutes. :)
