After a long awaited time, ship day has finally arrived. I dropped Matthew off yesterday evening at the Sheraton hotel, downtown, so that he could attempt a good night's rest before waking up at 3:30 a.m. this morning to begin processing. Needless to say, he did not get much sleep, mostly due to nerves. His roommate for the night was one of his fellow recruits (from the same recruiting office that Matthew came out of). I think that it was good for him to spend some time with another recruit, as they remind each other that they are both in the same boat and everyone is going through this process together.
In front of Matthew's house with his Mom before we headed downtown. The statue reads, "Home of the free because of the brave." The statue was a gift from my mom for Shirley in honor of Matthew.
Matthew's mom and I went downtown this morning to watch Matthew get sworn into the Air Force. We were able to spend a little bit of extra time with him while we waited, which was a nice surprise. There are approx. 65 other recruits that are shipping out today for various military branches (Army, Navy, Marines, and Air Force).
Getting sworn in-taking the military oath.
Standing at attention while receiving his charge to the military.
Fingerprinted and signed in.
One last hug-to last for the next 2 months. After Matthew finished all of his processing, he went through his travel briefing and then left on the bus to the airport. He was made the Group Leader of Group 1 for travel. This means that he is in charge of the 9 other recruits in his group and making sure that they get through security and onto the flight. His first opportunity to step up as a leader has been presented, and there are likely many other opportunities to follow. Some of his fellow recruits have already fondly nicknamed him, "Grandpa." Since Matthew is likely the oldest recruit reporting for duty, he will be given many responsibilities in leading the groups. It is definitely difficult to say good-bye, but I am holding onto the fact that Matthew and I will be reunited again at his graduation from Boot Camp in January, and we are always together in our hearts. I look forward to bringing you another update from Boot Camp soon, along with a mailing address for anyone who would like to send Matthew letters while he is away. I am so proud of my Airman. Thank you to everyone for all of your kind thoughts and support!
